This work gives an overview of Greenlandic literature, introduces the reader to the place of storytelling in that culture, and pre¬sents some tales told by Esajas Kuuitse, a renowned East Greenlandic storyteller, on a video recording. These tales are in the Tunumiisut language which is part of the Inuit dialect continuum. The gestures that accompany tales are an essential part of the art of storytelling. An analysis of the teller's gestures during one of the tales presented here sheds light on a wide range of features of oral communication.
